A wide variety of materials are used for seals in construction machinery, including nitrile rubber, fluoroelastomer (FKM), polyurethane, silicone rubber, and PTFE. Each material offers distinct performance characteristics: for instance, nitrile rubber is valued for its excellent oil and wear resistance, making it widely used in hydraulic systems; fluoroelastomer excels in high-temperature and oil-resistant applications, making it suitable for demanding environments; and polyurethane offers superior wear and tear resistance, commonly serving as the material for hydraulic cylinder seals.

 

Seal selection cannot be based solely on dimensions; it must also take into account the equipment's actual operating conditions. First, operating pressure must be considered, as different pressure ratings impose varying requirements on seal strength and structural design. Second, operating temperature is a critical factor; equipment exposed to prolonged high or low temperatures requires seal materials capable of withstanding those specific thermal conditions. Additionally, the working medium-such as hydraulic fluid or lubricating oil-influences material selection, as different materials exhibit varying levels of chemical compatibility and resistance to these fluids.

 

The equipment's mode of motion is another key factor in the selection process. Static seals, such as O-rings, are typically chosen for fixed connections. Reciprocating components-like hydraulic cylinder piston rods and pistons-require specialized hydraulic seals. Rotating components-such as motors and gear reducers-usually employ rotary seal structures, such as radial shaft seals (oil seals). Mismatches between the seal and the mode of motion can lead to accelerated wear, oil leakage, or even total seal failure.

 

Practical application also requires a comprehensive assessment of factors such as dimensional precision, installation space, service life, and cost. Selecting the appropriate material and structure enhances sealing performance, reduces the frequency of equipment maintenance, and extends the overall service life of the machinery. Therefore, the selection of seals for construction machinery should be grounded in actual operating conditions, ensuring a proper match based on pressure, temperature, working medium, and motion characteristics.
